Pre-Conference Tour: Southern History, Style and Heritage
Join us Wednesday morning, June 16 from 8:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m., for a tour highlighting the history, style and heritage of Georgia’s first city. Hosted by Savannah’s CAA, the Economic Opportunity Authority For Savannah-Chatham County, Inc (EOA), this southern adventure begins with a light breakfast at EOA’s most recently constructed facility, its Head Start and administration building, followed by a brief tour of the site.
We will then proceed with a guided tour focusing on Savannah’s rich, multi-cultural heritage. The tour will include a visit to the new Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum which chronicles the civil rights struggle of Georgia's oldest African American community from slavery to present. The tour will also include a visit to the Haitian Monument memorializing the role that more than 500 Haitian volunteers played in the 1779 Battle of Savannah during the Revolutionary War.
We will close out our southern journey by viewing other notable historical landmarks and the Hollywood sites where such movies as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil were filmed. For lunch, we will return to EOA for a taste of true southern cuisine catered by celebrity chef Paula Deen’s restaurant, The Lady and Sons.
Cost of the tour is $55 and includes a light breakfast, lunch and museum admission. Space is limited. Pre-registration, including payment, is required. Register for the tour on the conference registration form and, on the morning of the tour, please plan to meet us in the main lobby of the hotel (which is the lower level lobby not to be confused with the Atrium lobby one level up) at 8:00 a.m.
