The purpose of the Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence is to promote good management practices, ethical conduct, and public accountability for Iowa charitable nonprofit organizations as they perform their crucial community services.

 

The IRS has released a "preliminary staff discussion draft" of good governance practices for tax exempt organizations described in section 501(c)(3).  The discussion draft focuses primarily on policies and practices of the board of directors, and contains suggested practices in the following areas: mission statement, code of ethics, due diligence, duty of loyalty, transparency, fundraising policy, financial audits, compensation practices, and document retention policy.

These materials are from a continuing professional education program on governance and tax-exempt organization matters that the IRS recently conducted.

 

A training workbook for boards of directors with a focus on nonprofit organizations in Washington State.  Although it is targeted at Washington State nonprofits, much of the information included applies to nonprofits elsewhere in the country.  The workbook includes sections and worksheets ok: the role and responsibilities of the board, legal requirements, a director's role in organization accountability and liability, understanding your organization's finances, and what board excellence looks like for you and your board.

 

A Guide for Charities and Foundations"

Recently issued by The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, the Guide represents the first time that charities and foundations reflecting a broad cross-section of the American nonprofit community have come together to develop principles of ethical conduct, accountability, and transparency that they aspire to and encourage all organizations to follow. It outlines 33 practices designed to support board members and staff leaders of every charitable organization as they work to improve their own operations.
